Palos Park, Illinois is a village located in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is a suburb of Chicago, located about 20 miles southwest of the city. The population of Palos Park was 4,847 at the 2010 census.
History
Palos Park was first settled in the late 1800s by German and Irish immigrants. The village was originally known as "Hickory Hill" and was later renamed "Palos Park" after the nearby Palos Hills. The village was incorporated in 1914.
In the early 1900s, Palos Park was a popular destination for wealthy Chicagoans looking to escape the city. The village was home to many large estates, including the estate of the late Chicago mayor, Richard J. Daley.
Geography
Palos Park is located at 41°41'25" North, 87°48'17" West (41.690278, -87.804722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.2 square miles, all of it land.
Economy
Palos Park is a primarily residential community, with most of its residents commuting to nearby Chicago for work. The village does have some small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 4,847 people, 1,845 households, and 1,521 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,154.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.2% were married couples living together, 6.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.2% were non-families. 18.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 32.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $90,917, and the median income for a family was $103,917. Males had a median income of $76,250 versus $50,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $45,917.
