Palestine Summary

Palestine, Illinois is a small city located in the southeastern corner of the state, in Crawford County. It is situated on the banks of the Wabash River, and is home to a population of just over 2,000 people. The city is known for its rich history, its unique geography, and its diverse economy.

History

The area that is now Palestine was first settled in 1817 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The town was originally known as “Palestine Grove”, and was named after the biblical land of Palestine. The town was officially incorporated in 1837, and was named the county seat of Crawford County in 1841.
In the late 19th century, Palestine was a thriving agricultural center, with a population of over 1,000 people. The town was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a sawmill, and a brickyard. The town also had a railroad station, which connected it to the rest of the state.
In the early 20th century, Palestine experienced a period of decline. The railroad station closed in the 1920s, and the population began to decline. By the 1950s, the population had dropped to just over 1,000 people.

Geography

Palestine is located in the southeastern corner of Illinois, in Crawford County. It is situated on the banks of the Wabash River, and is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The city is located about 50 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri, and about 100 miles south of Chicago, Illinois.
The climate in Palestine is humid continental, with hot summers and cold winters. The average temperature in the summer is around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and the average temperature in the winter is around 30 degrees Fahrenheit.

Economy
