Oquawka Summary

History
Oquawka was founded in 1835 by William and Mary Oquawka, who were of Native American descent. The town was named after the Oquawka River, which was named after the Oquawka tribe. The town was originally a trading post for the local Native American tribes, and was later used as a stopover for steamboats traveling up and down the Mississippi River.
In 1837, the first post office was established in Oquawka. The town was incorporated in 1854, and the first school was built in 1856. The town grew steadily throughout the 19th century, and by the early 20th century, it had become a major shipping port for grain and livestock.
Geography
Oquawka is located at 40°59'25" North, 90°51'45" West (40.990278, -90.862444). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 1.02 square miles (2.64 km2), all land.
The village is located along the Mississippi River, and is part of the Burlington, IA–IL Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Economy
The economy of Oquawka is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, and is a major shipping port for grain and livestock. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,072.5 people per square mile (414.3/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 476.5 per square mile (184.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845.
