Oak Forest, Illinois is a city located in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is a suburb of Chicago, located approximately 25 miles southwest of the city. The population of Oak Forest was 28,086 at the 2010 census.

History

Oak Forest was first settled in the 1830s by German immigrants. The area was originally known as Germania, and the first post office was established in 1854. The name was changed to Oak Forest in 1873. The city was incorporated in 1927.
In the early 20th century, Oak Forest was a rural farming community. The population began to grow in the 1950s, as the city became a popular destination for Chicagoans looking for a suburban lifestyle. The population continued to grow in the following decades, and the city was officially incorporated in 1927.

Geography

Oak Forest is located at 41°37′N 87°45′W (41.619, -87.749). According to the 2010 census, Oak Forest has a total area of 8.9 square miles (23.1 km2), of which 8.8 square miles (22.8 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Economy

Oak Forest is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to a number of industrial and manufacturing companies. The largest employers in the city are the Oak Forest Hospital, the Oak Forest Public Library, and the Oak Forest Park District.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 28,086 people, 10,845 households, and 7,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,179.3 people per square mile (1,225.2/km2). There were 11,541 housing units at an average density of 1,303.3 per square mile (502.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 8.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.3% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.7% of the population.
There were 10,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $71,945. Males had a median income of $50,945 versus $37,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
