New Douglas Summary

Douglas, Illinois is a small village located in Madison County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, just south of the city of Alton. The village was founded in 1837 by William Douglas, a Scottish immigrant who had come to the area in search of a better life.

History

The area that is now Douglas was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The settlers were attracted to the area due to its fertile soil and abundant natural resources. The first settlers built a small log cabin and began to farm the land. In 1837, William Douglas purchased the land from the settlers and established the village of Douglas.
The village was named after William Douglas and was incorporated in 1839. The village quickly grew and by the mid-1800s, it had become a thriving community with a population of over 500 people. The village was home to a variety of businesses, including a sawmill, a gristmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.
In the late 1800s, the village began to decline due to the decline of the local economy. The sawmill and gristmill closed and the population began to dwindle. By the early 1900s, the population had dropped to just over 200 people.
In the mid-1900s, the village began to experience a resurgence. The population began to grow again and new businesses began to open. The village was also home to a number of small manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory and a canning factory.
