Morton Summary

Morton, Illinois is a village located in Tazewell County, Illinois, United States. The population was 16,267 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Morton was founded in 1854 by Jacob Morton, a farmer from Ohio. He purchased land from the government and began to develop the area. The village was incorporated in 1858 and was named after Jacob Morton.
In the late 19th century, Morton was a major producer of coal and clay. The coal mines were located in the area now known as Coal Mine Park. The clay was used to make bricks and pottery.
In the early 20th century, Morton became a major producer of agricultural products. The village was home to several large farms and was known as the "Garden Spot of Illinois".

Geography

Morton is located at 40°35'25" North, 89°37'17" West (40.590278, -89.621389). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 5.9 square miles (15.3 km2), all land.

Morton is home to several large employers, including Caterpillar Inc., Morton Buildings, and Morton International. The village is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 16,267 people, 6,541 households, and 4,541 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,741.3 people per square mile (1,058.2/km2). There were 6,945 housing units at an average density of 1,174.2 per square mile (453.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 6,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,945. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $24,945. About 3.7% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
