Maquon Summary

Maquon is a small village located in Knox County, Illinois, United States. The population was 517 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Galesburg Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Maquon was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after Maquon, a Native American chief of the Sauk tribe. The first post office was established in 1855.
Maquon was incorporated as a village in 1867. The village was a stop on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, which was built in 1871. The railroad brought new businesses and people to the area, and the village grew rapidly.

The economy of Maquon is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 517 people, 206 households, and 145 families residing in the village. The population density was 845.2 people per square mile (326.2/km2). There were 221 housing units at an average density of 359.2 per square mile (138.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.84% White, 0.19% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.19% Asian, and 0.58% from two or more races.
There were 206 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.8% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
