Mapleton Summary

Mapleton, Illinois is a small village located in Peoria County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Illinois River, about 25 miles northwest of Peoria. The village has a population of approximately 1,000 people and covers an area of 0.6 square miles.

History

Mapleton was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after the nearby Mapleton Creek, which was named after a mapmaker from New York. The settlers built a sawmill and a gristmill, and the village quickly grew. By 1845, Mapleton had a post office, a school, and a church.
In the late 19th century, Mapleton was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, and a cheese factory. The village also had a number of stores, including a general store, a hardware store, and a drug store.
In the early 20th century, Mapleton began to decline. The Great Depression hit the village hard, and many of the businesses closed. The population of the village decreased from 1,500 in 1930 to just over 1,000 in 2000.
