Mackinaw Summary

History

Mackinaw was founded in 1836 by William Mackinaw, a settler from Pennsylvania. The village was originally known as Mackinaw Station, and was a stop on the Chicago and Alton Railroad. The village was incorporated in 1872.

Economy

Mackinaw is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, a restaurant, and a gas station. The village is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer, a metal fabricator, and a machine shop.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,741 people, 690 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,444.3 people per square mile (558.7/km2). There were 717 housing units at an average density of 593.2 per square mile (229.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.90% White, 0.17% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.17% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.80% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 26.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
