Louisville Summary
Louisville is a small village located in Clay County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,068 at the 2010 census. Louisville is part of the Effingham, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Louisville was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Louisville, Kentucky. The village was named after the Kentucky city, and the first post office was established in 1855. The village was incorporated in 1858.
Geography
Louisville is located at 39°25'25" North, 88°25'45" West (39.423750, -88.429167). According to the 2010 census, Louisville has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Louisville is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several grain elevators, and the surrounding area is used for growing corn, soybeans, and wheat. The village also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,068 people, 431 households, and 294 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,179.3 people per square mile (455.3/km2). There were 467 housing units at an average density of 517.2 per square mile (199.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845.
