The area that is now Lexington was first settled in 1829 by a group of settlers from Lexington, Kentucky. The village was originally known as Lexington Station, and was incorporated in 1867. The village was named after the original settlers’ hometown of Lexington, Kentucky.
The village of Lexington was a major stop on the Illinois Central Railroad, and the railroad was a major factor in the growth of the village. The railroad provided transportation for goods and people, and allowed the village to become a major agricultural center.

Lexington is located at 40°30'25" North, 88°51'45" West (40.506944, -88.862500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.
