Iuka Summary

Iuka is a small village located in Marion County, Illinois, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Centralia, Illinois Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Iuka was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee. The town was named after the Iuka Indian tribe, which had lived in the area prior to the settlers’ arrival. The first post office was established in 1855.
The town grew slowly but steadily, and by the early 1900s, it had become a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, and a bank.
In the early 1900s, Iuka was also home to a large number of coal mines. The coal industry was a major source of employment for the town’s residents. The coal mines were eventually closed in the 1950s, and the town’s economy shifted to focus on agriculture.

Geography

Iuka is located at 38°37′N 88°59′W (38.619, -88.983). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.
The village is located in the Centralia, Illinois Micropolitan Statistical Area. It is situated in the western part of Marion County, near the border with Clinton County.

Economy

Iuka’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and wheat.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 376.7 per square mile (145.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 25.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,833 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,945. About 8.3% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
