Irvington Summary

Irvington, Illinois is a small village located in Madison County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, just south of the city of Alton. The village has a population of just over 1,000 people and is part of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area.

History

The area that is now Irvington was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of German immigrants. The village was originally known as “Germantown” and was later renamed “Irvington” in honor of Washington Irving, the famous American author. The village was officially incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Irvington was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several large farms and was known for its production of apples, peaches, and other fruits. The village also had a thriving lumber industry, with several sawmills located in the area.
In the early 20th century, Irvington began to experience a decline in its agricultural and lumber industries. The village was hit hard by the Great Depression and many of its residents moved away in search of work. The village was also affected by the construction of the nearby Alton Dam, which flooded much of the surrounding area.
