Hoyleton is a small village located in Washington County, Illinois, United States. The population was 517 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Centralia Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Hoyleton was founded in 1854 by German immigrants who had settled in the area. The village was named after the Hoyleton family, who were among the first settlers. The village was incorporated in 1872.

Geography

Hoyleton is located at 38°25'25" North, 89°17'45" West (38.423750, -89.295833). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2), all land.

Hoyleton's economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 517 people, 202 households, and 145 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,269.2 people per square mile (490.2/km2). There were 218 housing units at an average density of 531.2 per square mile (205.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.84% White, 0.19% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.19% Asian, and 0.58% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.58% of the population.
There were 202 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.9% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
