Gridley Summary

History

The small town of Gridley, Illinois is located in McLean County, about 25 miles northeast of Bloomington. The town was founded in 1854 by William Gridley, a farmer from New York who had moved to the area in 1851. Gridley was the first settlement in the area and was named after its founder.
The town grew slowly but steadily over the years, and by the late 19th century, it had become a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, and a post office.
In the early 20th century, the town experienced a period of growth and prosperity. The population increased from just over 500 in 1900 to nearly 1,000 by 1920. During this time, the town was home to several churches, a bank, a newspaper, and a variety of other businesses.
In the 1950s, the town began to decline as many of its residents moved away in search of better economic opportunities. By the 1970s, the population had dropped to just over 500.

Geography

Gridley is located in the central part of McLean County, about 25 miles northeast of Bloomington. The town is situated on the banks of the Mackinaw River, which flows through the area. The town is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland, and is located near several small lakes.
