Grafton Summary

Grafton, Illinois is a small village located in Jersey County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, approximately 25 miles north of St. Louis, Missouri. The village has a population of 1,127 as of the 2010 census.

History

Grafton was founded in 1832 by a group of settlers from New England. The village was named after Grafton, Massachusetts, the hometown of the settlers. The settlers were attracted to the area due to its proximity to the Mississippi River, which provided a means of transportation and trade.
The village was incorporated in 1854 and was a thriving river port town. It was a popular stop for steamboats and ferries, and was a major hub for the shipment of goods and supplies. The village was also home to a number of businesses, including a sawmill, a gristmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.
In the late 19th century, Grafton was a popular tourist destination. The village was home to a number of hotels and resorts, and was a popular spot for fishing and hunting.
