Gorham Summary
Gorham is a small village located in Fayette County, Illinois, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area.
History
Gorham was founded in 1854 by William Gorham, a settler from Ohio. The village was originally known as Gorham's Station, and was located on the Chicago and Vincennes Railroad. The village was incorporated in 1872.
Geography
Gorham is located at 38°45'25" North, 89°17'25" West (38.756944, -89.290278). According to the 2010 census, Gorham has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.
Economy
Gorham's economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 224 housing units at an average density of 365.2 per square mile (141.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.18% White, 0.37% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.37% Asian, and 0.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
