History
Fayetteville was founded in 1818 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The village was named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French military leader who fought alongside the American colonists during the Revolutionary War. The village was incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Fayetteville was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain mills, a sawmill, a brickyard, and a canning factory. The village also had a railroad station, which connected it to St. Louis and other nearby towns.

Fayetteville is located at 38°25'25" North, 89°50'45" West (38.423, -89.846). The village has a total area of 0.7 square miles, all of which is land.
The village is located in the Kaskaskia River Valley, which is part of the American Bottom region of southwestern Illinois. The Kaskaskia River flows through the village, and the village is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
