Ewing Summary
Ewing is a small village located in Franklin County, Illinois, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mount Vernon Micropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Ewing was founded in 1818 by William Ewing, a Revolutionary War veteran. He purchased the land from the government and began to build a small settlement. The village was originally known as Ewing's Settlement, but was later changed to Ewing. The village was incorporated in 1872.
Ewing was a small farming community for many years. In the late 19th century, the village began to grow as coal mining became an important industry in the area. The coal mines provided employment for many of the residents and helped to fuel the local economy.
Geography
Ewing is located at 38°17'25"N 88°51'45"W (38.290278, -88.862444). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

Ewing's economy is largely based on agriculture and coal mining. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant. The village also has a post office and a bank.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 891.7 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 379.2 per square mile (146.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
