Equality Summary

Equality is a small village located in Gallatin County, Illinois, United States. The village is situated on the banks of the Saline River, approximately 10 miles south of Shawneetown. As of the 2010 census, the population of Equality was 519.

History

The area that is now Equality was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of pioneers from Kentucky. The village was originally known as Salineville, but was later renamed Equality in 1819 in honor of the Declaration of Independence. The village was officially incorporated in 1837.
In the early days, Equality was a bustling river port town, with a large number of steamboats and barges traveling up and down the Saline River. The village was also home to a number of businesses, including a sawmill, a gristmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.
In the late 1800s, the village began to decline as the river traffic decreased and the railroad bypassed the town. The population of Equality dropped from a peak of over 1,000 in the late 1800s to just over 500 by the turn of the century.

Equality is located in southeastern Illinois, approximately 10 miles south of Shawneetown. The village is situated on the banks of the Saline River, which flows through the village and is a tributary of the Ohio River. The village is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland.
