History
Eldorado was founded in 1858 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The city was named after the mythical city of El Dorado, which was said to be a city of gold. The city was incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Eldorado was a thriving coal mining town. The coal industry was the main source of employment for the city's residents. The coal mines were eventually closed in the early 20th century, and the city's economy shifted to agriculture and manufacturing.

Eldorado is located at 37°45'N 88°37'W (37.75, -88.62). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. There were 1,619 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
