El Paso Summary
El Paso is a small village located in Woodford County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Vermilion River, approximately 20 miles east of Peoria. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
History
El Paso was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after the city of El Paso, Texas, which was named after the Spanish phrase “el paso del rio” meaning “the pass of the river.” The village was incorporated in 1867.
Geography
El Paso is located at 40°45′N 89°17′W (40.75, -89.28). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
Economy
El Paso’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, including the El Paso Seed Company, which produces a variety of vegetable and flower seeds. The village also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.7 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 767 housing units at an average density of 637.5 per square mile (246.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,845. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
