Dupo Summary

Dupo is a small village located in St. Clair County, Illinois, United States. It is situated along the Mississippi River, just south of the city of East St. Louis. The population of Dupo was 4,138 at the 2010 census, making it the second-largest village in St. Clair County.

History

The area that is now Dupo was first settled in the early 1800s by French and German immigrants. The village was originally known as "Dupo Station" and was named after the Dupo Creek, which runs through the area. The creek was named after a French settler, Pierre Dupo, who was one of the first settlers in the area.
In 1883, the Chicago and Alton Railroad built a station in Dupo, which helped to spur the growth of the village. The village was officially incorporated in 1887.

Geography

Dupo is located at 38°25'25" North, 90°14'45" West (38.423, -90.246). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Economy

Dupo is home to several industries, including a steel mill, a chemical plant, and a paper mill. The village is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
