Dongola Summary

Dongola is a small village located in Union County, Illinois, United States. The population was 590 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Carbondale-Marion-Herrin, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Dongola was founded in 1858 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The town was named after the city of Dongola in Sudan. The first post office was established in 1859. The town was incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Dongola was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, and a sawmill.

Geography

Dongola is located at 37°41'25" North, 89°14'17" West (37.690278, -89.238056). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

Economy

Dongola's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a hog farm, and a poultry farm. The town also has a few small businesses, including a gas station, a restaurant, and a grocery store.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 590 people, 233 households, and 162 families residing in the village. The population density was 983.3 people per square mile (380.2/km2). There were 253 housing units at an average density of 418.3 per square mile (161.3/km2).
