History

De Soto was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee. The town was named after the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto, who explored the area in the 16th century. The first post office was established in 1837.
In the late 19th century, De Soto was a thriving river port. The town was home to several sawmills, gristmills, and a brickyard. The town also had a large number of saloons and gambling houses.
