Dahlgren Summary

Dahlgren is a small village located in Hamilton County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Big Muddy River, approximately 20 miles south of the county seat of McLeansboro. The population of Dahlgren was estimated to be 545 in the year 2000.

History

The area that is now Dahlgren was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of German immigrants. The village was originally known as “New Berlin” and was later renamed “Dahlgren” in honor of Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren, a Union naval officer during the Civil War. The village was officially incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Dahlgren was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a sawmill, and a brickyard. The railroad also played an important role in the development of the village, as it provided a means of transportation for goods and people.

Dahlgren is located in the southeastern corner of Hamilton County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Big Muddy River, approximately 20 miles south of the county seat of McLeansboro.
