Colp Summary

Colp is a small village located in Franklin County, Illinois, United States. It is situated in the south-central part of the state, about 25 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri. The population of Colp was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Colp is located at 38°17'25" North, 89°17'25" West (38.290278, -89.290278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

History

Colp was founded in 1883 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The village was named after Colp Creek, which was named after a local Native American chief. The first post office was established in 1884.
In the early 1900s, Colp was a thriving coal mining town. The coal mines provided employment for many of the residents. The coal industry declined in the mid-1900s, and the town's population began to decline.

Economy

Today, Colp is a small rural community with a population of just over 1,000 people. The economy is largely based on agriculture and small businesses. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,817.5 people per square mile (700.7/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 781.7 per square mile (301.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $21,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.3% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
