Coal Valley Summary

Coal Valley is a village located in Rock Island County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,941 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Quad Cities metropolitan area.

History

Coal Valley was founded in 1856 by a group of miners who were looking for coal. The miners found coal in the area and began to mine it. The village was originally called Coal Valley because of the coal that was found in the area. The village was incorporated in 1868.
In the late 19th century, Coal Valley was a major coal mining center. The coal mines provided employment for many of the residents of the village. The coal mines also provided the fuel for the local industries.
In the early 20th century, the coal mines began to close and the village began to decline. The population of the village decreased and many of the businesses closed.
In the late 20th century, the village began to experience a resurgence. The village was revitalized with the opening of a new shopping center and the construction of new homes.

Coal Valley is located at 41°30'25" North, 90°30'45" West (41.506944, -90.5125). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Coal Valley is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several manufacturing companies, including a paper mill, a plastics factory, and a metal fabrication plant.
The village also has a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses. The village is home to a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a pharmacy.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,941 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,326.2 people per square mile (510.7/km2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 522.2 per square mile (201.6/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $51,964. Males had a median income of $37,917 versus $25,938 for females. The per capita income for the village was $20,945.
