Centralia Summary

Centralia, Illinois is a small city located in Marion County, Illinois, United States. It is located about 50 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri, and is part of the Centralia-Mount Vernon-Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city has a population of about 13,000 people, and is the county seat of Marion County.

History

Centralia was founded in 1853 by William McHenry, a settler from Kentucky. The city was named after the nearby Centralia Coal Mine, which was the first coal mine in the area. The city quickly grew, and by 1860, it had a population of over 1,000 people.
In 1864, the Centralia Massacre occurred, in which a group of Confederate guerrillas attacked the town and killed over 150 people. This event is still remembered today, and is commemorated with a memorial in the city.
In the late 19th century, Centralia became a major coal mining center, and the city's population grew to over 10,000 people. The city was also home to several large coal companies, including the Centralia Coal Company, the Centralia Coal and Iron Company, and the Centralia Coal and Coke Company.

Centralia is located in the southern part of Marion County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Kaskaskia River, and is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The city has a total area of 4.2 square miles, of which 4.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water. The city is located at an elevation of 645 feet above sea level.
