Bunker Hill Summary

Bunker Hill is a small village located in Macoupin County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,619 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Metro-East region of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area.

History

Bunker Hill was founded in 1835 by a group of settlers from Bunker Hill, Massachusetts. The village was named after the Battle of Bunker Hill, which took place during the American Revolutionary War. The village was incorporated in 1867.

Geography

Bunker Hill is located at 39°17'25" North, 89°51'45" West (39.290278, -89.862444). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Bunker Hill is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, including a large dairy farm. The village also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,619 people, 645 households, and 454 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,346.2 people per square mile (519.3/km2). There were 676 housing units at an average density of 556.2 per square mile (214.9/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.44% White, 0.37% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.62% of the population.
There were 645 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 26.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
