Brussels Summary

Brussels is a small village located in Calhoun County, Illinois, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hardin-Calhoun Community Unit School District.

History

The village of Brussels was founded in 1836 by a group of German immigrants. The village was named after the Belgian city of Brussels. The first settlers were mostly farmers and the village was a small farming community. The village was incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Brussels was a thriving community with a variety of businesses, including a hotel, a bank, a blacksmith shop, a general store, a mill, and a creamery. The village also had a school, a post office, and a railroad station.

Geography

Brussels is located at 39°17'25" North, 90°25'45" West (39.290278, -90.429167). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Brussels is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a hog farm, and a grain farm. The village also has a few small businesses, including a gas station, a restaurant, and a grocery store.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 376.7 per square mile (145.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.9% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, and 0.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.2% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845.
