Benson Summary

Benson, Illinois is a small village located in the southwestern corner of Iroquois County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Iroquois River, approximately 25 miles south of Kankakee and 50 miles south of Chicago. History

The area that is now Benson was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of French-Canadian fur traders. The village was officially founded in 1854 and was named after the first postmaster, William Benson. The village was incorporated in 1872 and has remained relatively unchanged since then.
In the late 1800s, Benson was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a sawmill, and a brickyard. The village also had a railroad station, which connected it to the larger cities of Kankakee and Chicago.
In the early 1900s, Benson began to experience a decline in population as many of its residents moved away to larger cities in search of better job opportunities. The village was also affected by the Great Depression, which caused many of its businesses to close.
