Bensenville Summary

Bensenville is a village located in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. It is a western suburb of Chicago, located approximately 17 miles (27 km) from the Loop. As of the 2010 census, the village had a population of 18,352.

History

The area that is now Bensenville was first settled in the 1830s by German immigrants. The village was originally known as Tioga, and was later renamed Bensenville in honor of its first postmaster, Benzen Berger. The village was incorporated in 1884.
In the early 20th century, Bensenville was a major center for the manufacture of farm equipment. The village was also home to a large brickyard, which supplied bricks for many of the buildings in the area.

Geography

Bensenville is located at 41°56'51" North, 87°57'45" West (41.947, -87.962). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.

Economy

Bensenville is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The village is also home to O'Hare International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 18,352 people, 6,845 households, and 4,717 families residing in the village. The population density was 3,521.3 people per square mile (1,364.2/km2). There were 7,093 housing units at an average density of 1,377.2 per square mile (531.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 77.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 8.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 6.7% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.2% of the population.
There were 6,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.27.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $54,945, and the median income for a family was $63,945. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $35,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $24,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
