Bellwood Summary

Bellwood is a village located in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is a suburb of Chicago, located approximately 13 miles west of the city's downtown. The population was 19,071 at the 2010 census.

History

Bellwood was first settled in 1833 by a group of German immigrants. The village was originally known as "Bell's Woods" after the family who owned the land. The name was later changed to Bellwood. The village was incorporated in 1925.

Bellwood is located at 41°52'17" North, 87°48'45" West (41.871445, -87.812500). According to the 2010 census, Bellwood has a total area of 3.9 square miles, all land.

Economy

Bellwood is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The village is also home to a number of corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the Illinois State Lottery.

As of the 2010 census, there were 19,071 people, 6,945 households, and 4,845 families residing in the village. The population density was 4,890.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the village was 44.2% White, 33.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 13.2% from other races, and 3.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 28.2% of the population.
