Beecher Summary

Beecher is a village located in Will County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,359 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area.

History

Beecher was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after the Beecher family, who were among the first settlers. The Beecher family was originally from Connecticut and had moved to New York before settling in Illinois.

The first post office in Beecher was established in 1837 The village was incorporated in 1872

Geography

Beecher is located at 41°22′17″N 87°48′45″W (41.371400, -87.812500). According to the 2010 census, Beecher has a total area of 2.45 square miles (6.34 km2), all land.

Economy

Beecher is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, and a few restaurants. The village also has a few industrial parks, which provide employment opportunities for local residents.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 4,359 people, 1,619 households, and 1,097 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,788.2 people per square mile (692.2/km2). There were 1,717 housing units at an average density of 704.2 per square mile (272.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 1,619 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
