Baldwin Summary

Baldwin is a small village located in Randolph County, Illinois. It is situated on the Kaskaskia River, approximately 25 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri. The population of Baldwin was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Baldwin was founded in 1819 by William Baldwin, a settler from Kentucky. The village was originally known as “Baldwin’s Settlement” and was located on the Kaskaskia River. The village was incorporated in 1837 and was named after William Baldwin.
In the early 19th century, Baldwin was a thriving river port and a major trading center for the surrounding area. The village was also home to a number of businesses, including a sawmill, a grist mill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.
In the late 19th century, Baldwin began to decline as the railroad bypassed the village. The decline continued into the 20th century, and by the 1950s, the population had dropped to just over 500.

Geography

Baldwin is located at 38°25'25" North, 89°45'45" West (38.423, -89.7625). The village is situated on the Kaskaskia River, approximately 25 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri.
The village has a total area of 0.6 square miles, all of which is land. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills.
