Atlanta Summary

Atlanta, Illinois is a small city located in Logan County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Embarras River, about 25 miles east of Springfield, the state capital. The city has a population of 2,719 as of the 2010 census, making it the smallest city in the state.

History

The area that is now Atlanta was first settled in 1829 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The town was originally known as "Mud Creek" due to the muddy conditions of the area. In 1837, the town was renamed "Atlanta" after the city of Atlanta, Georgia.
