Atkinson was founded in 1854 by William Atkinson, a settler from Ohio. The village was originally known as Atkinson's Grove, but the name was changed to Atkinson in 1856. The village was incorporated in 1872.
Atkinson was a major stop on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, which ran through the village from 1854 to 1971. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the village, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people.

Geography

Atkinson is located at 41°14'25"N 90°17'45"W (41.240278, -90.295833). According to the 2010 census, Atkinson has a total area of 0.86 square miles (2.23 km2), all land.

Atkinson's economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses. The village also has a few restaurants and bars.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,269.3 people per square mile (490.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 548.3 per square mile (211.9/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
