Altamont Summary

Altamont, Illinois is a small city located in Effingham County, Illinois. It is situated in the southeastern part of the state, about 40 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri. The city has a population of approximately 2,500 people and covers an area of 1.3 square miles.

History

Altamont was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The city was named after the nearby Altamont Creek, which was named after a mountain in Scotland. The city was incorporated in 1858 and was the first city in Effingham County.
In the late 19th century, Altamont was a thriving agricultural community. The city was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, and a canning factory. The city also had a railroad station, which connected it to other towns in the area.
