Alma Summary

Alma is a small village located in Marion County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Kaskaskia River, approximately 10 miles south of Centralia. The population of Alma was 1,072 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Alma was first settled in 1819 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The village was originally known as “Kaskaskia”, after the nearby river. In 1836, the name was changed to “Alma”, after the daughter of one of the settlers.
The village was incorporated in 1867, and the first mayor was elected in 1868. The first post office was established in 1871.
In the late 19th century, Alma was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a sawmill, and a brickyard.

Geography

Alma is located at 38°30′N 89°14′W (38.50, -89.23). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.
The village is situated on the banks of the Kaskaskia River, approximately 10 miles south of Centralia. The Kaskaskia River is a tributary of the Mississippi River, and is the only river in Illinois that flows south to north.

Economy

Alma’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a sawmill, and a brickyard.
The village is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,072 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,179.2 people per square mile (454.7/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 535.3 per square mile (206.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.7% White, 0.7% African American, 0.1% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.1% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
