Aledo Summary

Aledo is a small city located in Mercer County, Illinois, United States. It is situated along the banks of the Mississippi River, approximately 25 miles southwest of the Quad Cities. The population was 3,640 at the 2010 census.

History

Aledo was founded in 1837 by William and Mary Ann Aledo, who had moved to the area from Ohio. The town was named after the Aledo family, and the first post office was established in 1839. The town was incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Aledo was a major stop on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. The railroad brought many new businesses to the town, including a flour mill, a brickyard, and a furniture factory.

Geography

Aledo is located at 41°14'25" North, 90°41'45" West (41.240278, -90.695833). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles, all land.

Economy

Aledo's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large farms, as well as a number of small businesses. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a plastics plant, a metal fabrication plant, and a food processing plant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 3,640 people, 1,521 households, and 990 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,664.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,521 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $22,500 for females.
