Albany Summary

Albany is a small village located in Whiteside County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sterling-Rock Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Albany was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from Albany, New York. The village was originally known as "Albany Station" due to its location on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. The name was changed to Albany in 1854.
The village was incorporated in 1872. In the late 19th century, Albany was a major center for the production of agricultural implements. The village was also home to a number of manufacturing plants, including a brickyard, a canning factory, and a flour mill.

Geography

Albany is located at 41°45'25" North, 89°59'45" West (41.756944, -89.995833). According to the 2010 census, Albany has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

Albany's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to a number of agricultural implement manufacturers, including John Deere, Case IH, and New Holland. The village is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 674.2 per square mile (260.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
