Woodstock Summary

Woodstock, Illinois is a city located in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The city is located approximately 50 miles northwest of Chicago and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 25,528.

History

The area that is now Woodstock was first settled in 1844 by German immigrants. The city was originally known as Centerville due to its location at the center of McHenry County. In 1852, the name was changed to Woodstock after the English city of the same name. The city was officially incorporated in 1873.
In the late 19th century, Woodstock was a major center for the production of furniture and other wood products. The city was also home to several breweries and distilleries.

Geography

Woodstock is located at 42°17'N 88°27'W (42.28, -88.45). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Woodstock is home to several major employers, including Woodstock School District 200, Centegra Health System, and Woodstock Corporation. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 25,528 people, 9,945 households, and 6,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,097.3 people per square mile (1,196.2/km2). There were 10,541 housing units at an average density of 1,280.3 per square mile (494.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.7% of the population.
There were 9,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $24,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
