West Union was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Vandalia. The village was named after the nearby Union Church, which was built in 1836. The village was incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, West Union was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a sawmill, and a brickyard. The village also had a number of stores, a hotel, and a post office.

West Union is located at 39°14'25"N 88°59'45"W (39.240278, -88.995833). The village is situated on the banks of the Embarras River, and is part of the Effingham-Vandalia-Teutopolis Metropolitan Statistical Area.
