Wauconda, Illinois is a village located in Lake County, Illinois, United States. The population was 13,603 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lake County. Wauconda is a rural community located in the northern part of the state, about 40 miles northwest of Chicago.

History

The area that is now Wauconda was first settled in the 1830s by settlers from New England. The first settler was William Wauconda, who arrived in 1837 and established a trading post. The village was officially incorporated in 1887.
The village was named after the Potawatomi chief Wauconda, who lived in the area in the early 1800s. The name is derived from the Potawatomi word for "spirit water," referring to the many springs in the area.

Geography

Wauconda is located at 42°14′N 88°7′W (42.23, -88.12). According to the 2010 census, Wauconda has a total area of 5.9 square miles (15.3 km2), of which 5.8 square miles (15.1 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
The village is located in the northern part of Lake County, about 40 miles northwest of Chicago. It is bordered by the villages of Island Lake to the north, Lake Zurich to the east, and Barrington to the south.

As of the 2010 census, there were 13,603 people, 5,093 households, and 3,541 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,339.3 people per square mile (902.2/km2). There were 5,309 housing units at an average density of 914.3 per square mile (353.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 87.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.7% of the population.
There were 5,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.21.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $71,917. Males had a median income of $50,945 versus $36,917 for females. The per capita income for the village was $27,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.3% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
