Walnut Hill is a small village located in the southern part of Illinois, in Franklin County. It is situated on the banks of the Kaskaskia River, about 10 miles south of Benton. History

Walnut Hill was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The village was named after the walnut trees that grew in the area. The settlers built a log cabin and a small store, and the village quickly grew. By the late 1800s, the village had a post office, a school, a blacksmith shop, and several other businesses.
In the early 1900s, the village was home to a large number of coal mines. The coal industry provided jobs for many of the residents, and the village prospered. However, the coal industry declined in the mid-1900s, and the village began to decline as well.
