Versailles Summary

Versailles is a small village located in Brown County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,072 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mount Sterling Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Versailles was first settled in 1819 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The village was originally known as "New Kentucky" and was later renamed Versailles after the French city of the same name. The village was incorporated in 1867.

Geography

Versailles is located at 39°45'25" North, 90°45'25" West (39.756944, -90.756944). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Versailles is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a hog farm, and a grain farm. The village also has a few small businesses, including a hardware store, a grocery store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,072 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,521.4 people per square mile (586.3/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 671.4 per square mile (259.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.7% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845.
