Tonica Summary
Tonica is a small village located in LaSalle County, Illinois, United States. It is situated along the Illinois River, approximately 25 miles southwest of the city of Chicago. Geography
Tonica is located at 41°14'25" North, 89°2'25" West (41.240278, -89.040278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
History
Tonica was first settled in 1835 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as "Tonica Station" and was a stop on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. The village was officially incorporated in 1872.
Economy
Tonica's economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a hog farm, and a grain farm. The village also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,000 people, 393 households, and 279 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,637.2 people per square mile (631.2/km2). There were 412 housing units at an average density of 668.2 per square mile (258.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.90% White, 0.30% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.90% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.90% of the population.
There were 393 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 24.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $48,750. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,945.
