Tiskilwa Summary

Tiskilwa is a small village located in Bureau County, Illinois, United States. The population was 803 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ottawa–Streator Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Tiskilwa was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after the Potawatomi word for “place of the prairie chicken”. The first post office was established in 1837.
In 1854, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad was built through the village, connecting it to the larger cities of Chicago and St. Louis. This allowed for the growth of the village, as it became a stop for travelers and goods.
In 1867, the village was incorporated and the first mayor was elected. The village continued to grow and by the early 1900s, it had a population of over 1,000.

Geography

Tiskilwa is located at 41°17′N 89°25′W (41.28, -89.41). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.
The village is located in the Tiskilwa Creek Valley, which is part of the Illinois River Valley. The creek is a tributary of the Illinois River.

Economy

The economy of Tiskilwa is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, which produce corn, soybeans, and other crops.
The village also has several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 803 people, 327 households, and 221 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 355 housing units at an average density of 393.3 per square mile (151.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.9% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 327 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.3% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,845. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 5.3% of those age 65 or over.
