Tilton Summary

Tilton is a small village located in Vermilion County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Vermilion River, about 10 miles south of Danville. The population of Tilton was 1,845 in the 2010 census.

History

Tilton was founded in 1854 by William Tilton, a local farmer. He named the village after himself and it was incorporated in 1858. The village was originally a farming community, but it soon became a center for coal mining. The coal industry was the main source of employment for the village until the 1950s.
In the late 19th century, Tilton was a popular destination for tourists. It was known for its scenic beauty and its many recreational activities. The village was also home to several resorts, including the Tilton Hotel, which was built in 1891.
